The central part of the coin features a portrait of HM King Juan Carlos I. The name of the issuing country, ‘ESPAÑA’, forms an arc on the left. The mintmark appears on the right and the year appears at the bottom on the left. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Additional information

Spain is redesigning its national backs and is thus complying with the European Commission's recommendation for a uniform design of national backs. The coins of the second series will not have some stars on the edge and the country name. The year appears on the left and the abbreviation of the mint on the right of the monarch's head. This corresponds to the European Commission's requirement that the stars on the outer ring should be arranged in the same way as on the European flag.
