The inner part of the coin features Bremen town hall, with the Bremen Roland statue in the foreground. The word ‘BREMEN’ is inscribed below the town hall on the right. The mint mark, represented by the letter A, D, F, G or J, appears at the top left. The initials of the artist, Bodo Broschat, are at the very bottom, just below the statue. The name of the issuing country, ‘D’, and the year, ‘2010’, are inserted at the top and bottom of the outer ring of the coin respectively, amid the twelve stars of the European flag.

Additional information

The coin shows the Bremen town hall (built 1405-1410. rebuilt 1608-1612) with the Roland statue in front of it, a world cultural heritage site since 2004. The shield of Roland bears the double eagle of the imperial coat of arms as a symbol of the long contested claim to imperial freedom. The statue (traced back to Hruotland (≈736-778), Count of the Breton Margraviate in Charlemagne's Frankish Empire, Knight and Hero of the Roland Song), symbol of the city's rights, is in reality facing Bremen Cathedral, but has been rotated 90° in the depiction. Originally, only the Bremen town hall was to be depicted on the coin.
