The inner part of the coin depicts, in the centre, the Portuguese coat of arms and the ‘República’ effigy, two of the most representative symbols of the Portuguese Republic, surrounded by the legend ‘República Portuguesa — 1910-2010’, the mintmark ‘INCM’ and the name of the author ‘JOSE CÂNDIDO’. Additional information

The coin commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first Portuguese Republic. After an assassination of a member of parliament on 3 October 1910, riots broke out in Lisbon. A provisional government proclaimed the Republic on 5 October 1910. The coin presents two of its symbols: Coat of Arms and República. The "Efígie da República" is modelled after Eugène Delacroix's "Liberty", with a Phrygian cap, the symbol of freedom and independence, and encircled by an olive branch symbolising peace. She is regarded as the personification of the Republic - a bust of her is present in public buildings. In the background, as in the coat of arms of Portugal, the coat of arms shield can be seen on an armillary sphere, a navigational device from the times of the Portuguese sailing of the world's oceans.
