The desigh shows the Church of St. Michael in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony which has been on the Unesco World Cultural Heritage list since 1985. At the top the year of issuance ‘2014’ and at the left the mintmark (A, D, F, G, J). At the bottom, the inscription ‘NIEDERSACHSEN’ and underneath the indication of the issuing country ‘D’. At the top right, the initials of the engraver OE (Ott Erich). The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Additional information

Shown is the southeast view of the church St. Michael in Hildesheim. The double-choir basilica, built in 1010-1033 in the Ottonian, pre-Romanesque architectural style in the ground plan of a double cross, has square towers above the two quadrants; the transepts are each flanked by two round, smaller stair towers. The entire building follows a geometric concept developed from squares of equal size, with the crossing square as the basic unit. The Michaeliskirche was founded by the Benedictines and is today a simultaneous church and since 1985 a world cultural heritage site.
