Enlargement of the European Union by ten new Member States

The design describes a stylised pillar from which the sprouts grow upwards. The sprouts represent the enlargement of the European Union. The pillar represents the foundation for growth. Near the pillar there are the letters ‘EU’. In the upper part of the coin there is the year ‘2004’. Twelve stars, together with the year, surround the design.

Additional information

The coin shows a stylised branch from which ten leaves sprout. This is a metaphorical theme: the ten shoots represent the EU enlargement to the ten new Member States (Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Cyprus), while the ground provides the foundation for growth. Below this floor, the letters "EU" and "ρ" (small Rho) are written; one reads Euro. It does not bear the designation of the issuing state.
