Berlin " Charlottenburg Castle "

The design shows the main building of the Charlottenburg Palace from the side of the Cour d' Honneur. The inner part also features the name ‘BERLIN’ and the mint mark of the respective mint (‘A’, ‘D’, ‘F’, ‘G’ or ‘J’) at the bottom, the issuing country's country code ‘D’ right at the top, the year ‘2018’ left at the top and the engraver's mark left at the bottom. The coin's outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Additional information

The coin shows - but without the equestrian statue of the Great Elector which is located there - the street side of Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin, enlarged in the late baroque style by Johann Friedrich Eosander von Göthe in 1701-1713. The dome of the palace is dominated by a sculpture of the goddess of fate Fortuna, a 4.50 m high recreation of the Baroque original, which was destroyed in the war, made of gilded sheet copper by Richard Scheibe in 1956. In the foreground, on the two guard houses, there are two replicas - supplemented by sword and shield - of an antique statue known as the Borghesian Fencer, which was made as a hollow zinc casting between 1840 and 1848 and is itself a marble copy of a bronze original from the 3rd century BC, probably made by Agasias (son of Dositheos) from Ephesus around 100 BC.
