The design depicts in the foreground the aqueduct of Segovia. At the top of the inner circle and in circular sense is the name of the issuing country ‘ESPAÑA’ and underneath it the year of issuance ‘2016’. At the top right is the mint mark. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Additional information

The old town of Segovia has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, as has the aqueduct, which was commissioned by the Roman Emperor Domitian and completed under Trajan in 98 AD. With a length of 728 m and 118 arches up to 28 m high, it is considered the best preserved testimony to Roman architecture on the Iberian Peninsula. Until 1974 it supplied the city with water from springs of the Río Frío, which flows 17 km south of the city. In the centre of the motif is the patron saint of Segovia, the Virgin of Fuencisla. The sculpture of Mary with the Child Jesus was added to the aqueduct in the 16th century, after the reconstruction of 36 arches carried out under the Catholic Monarchs.
