Commemorative coin2018Santiago de Compostela(Part of the National series " UNESCO's World Natural and Cultural Heritage Sites ") |
Official Journal of the European Union |
The City of Santiago de Compostela was declared World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1985, considering its urban beauty and monumental integrity added to the deep echoes of its spiritual and cultural significance of the Middle Ages: the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage. The Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James) is a large network of ancient pilgrim routes stretching across Europe and coming together at the tomb of St. James in Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. The design reproduces the sculpture of Santiago as a central figure in the canvas of the Puerta Santa of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. On the left hand side, in semi-circle, is the word “ESPAÑA”, at the bottom left the year of issuance “2018” and underneath the mint mark. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag. |

Additional information |
The coin depicts the coat of arms of the King of Spain. The coat of arms shows a castle with three towers in the upper left-hand corner, symbolising the Kingdom of Castile, which first split off from the Kingdom of Leon - represented by a lion in the upper right-hand corner - in 1065. The coat of arms of the principality of Catalonia, founded in 1137 and part of the crown of Aragon, is represented at the bottom left with vertical stripes; at the bottom right, the Navarra chain represents the Kingdom of Navarre, founded in 824. At the very bottom, the pomegranate represents the Kingdom of Granada, founded in 1492. In the centre of the shield, the oval with three lilies represents the Duchy of Anjou, which existed from 1360 to 1481 and from which the king came from the House of Bourbon-Anjou. At the very bottom of the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece is the ram of the Order. The crown is decorated with a cross on the orb. |
