The design depicts a composition symbolising the fertility of Earth: on a semicircle indicating the terrestrial sphere, a seed fed by the water waits to sprout; above the Earth, a vine, an olive twig and an ear grow from a tree trunk; around, the inscription ‘NUTRIRE IL PIANETA’; on the left the initials of the designer Maria Grazia Urbani, ‘MGU’; on the right, the monogram of Italian Republic ‘RI’ and ‘R’, identifying the Mint of Rome; in the middle, logo of the EXPO MILANO 2015. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Additional information

"NUTRIRE IL PIANETA" (feed the planet) is the first part of the World Expo's motto, "energia per la vita" (energy for life) the second. It is intended to combine technology, innovation, culture, tradition and creativity with the themes of food and nutrition and thus ties in with themes that have already played a role in previous world exhibitions. The theme is visualised by the stylised representation of a hemisphere and, above it, a watered seed before germination, as well as a grape, an olive branch and an ear of wheat. Below is the logo of Expo 2015, an overlay of the characters EXPO and 2015.
