The coin features a portrait of the great Estonian chess player Paul Keres with some chess pieces. At the top left in semi-circle is the inscription ‘PAUL KERES’. At the left side is the name of the issuing country ‘EESTI’ and underneath is the year of issuance ‘2016’. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag. |

Paul Keres (1916-1975), the Estonian chess master, was awarded the title "International Grand Master" in 1950. The first Estonian national €2 commemorative coin shows him in profile, with two chess pieces and four chessmen - pawn, king, knight and rook (from left to right) - the latter three of which are both embossed in relief and (upside down) recessed as a "negative". |
