Commemorative coin

The Baltic culture

Official Journal of the European Union

The design shows an amber disc, one of the most characteristic symbols of the Baltic culture. The disc is decorated with a crosspiece of drilled dots — an ornament symbolising the world’s axis. At the top is the name of the issuing country ‘LIETUVA’, flanked by the mint mark and the year of issuance ‘2016’. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Additional information

The largest archaeological amber find in the world, the "Schwarzort treasure", was made in 1860-1881 in Juodkrantė, but was largely lost during the Second World War. The coin motif created by Jolanta Mikulskytė and Giedrius Paulauskis shows an approx. 5000 year old Neolithic amber disk, one of the most characteristic symbols of the Baltic culture.
