The portrait of Saint Marino, detail of a painting by Giovan Battista Urbinelli, the date 2017, the mintmark of the Italian Mint ‘R’, the legend ‘San Marino’, AL initials of the artist, arched 12 stars. The coins’ outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag. The edge-lettering of the 2-euro coin is: 2 *, repeated six times, alternately upright and inverted.

Additional information

Portrait of Marinus († 366), based on an altarpiece from the monastery of Santa Chiara, created in 1640 by Giovan Battista Urbinelli (1605-1663) and now in the State Museum of San Marino. The ostrich feathers above the three towers of San Marino symbolise the oldest existing republic in the world.
