The inner part of the piece represents the logo of the University of Liege, with the dates 1817 — 2017 below, surrounded by the inscription 200 ANS UNIVERSITE DE LIEGE — 200 YEARS UNIVERSITY OF LIEGE and the country indication BE. The mintmark of Brussels, a helmeted head of the Archangel Michael and the mint directors’ mintmark, the coat of arms of the municipality Herzele, are located respectively on the right and left of the country indication. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

The pill bears the emblem of the University of Liège with the year 1817-2017, surrounded by the inscription "200 ANS UNIVERSITE DE LIEGE - 200 YEARS UNIVERSITY OF LIEGE" (200 years University of Liège) and the national code "BE" for the issuing country, flanked by the Belgian mint mark, the helmeted head of the Archangel Michael, and the mint master mark Ingrid Van Herzele, the coat of arms of the city of Herzele. The campus of the university, founded during the time of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands under King William I, is located at Sart Tilman, on a wooded hill in the south of Liège, formerly owned by the Benedictine monasteries of St James and St Laurent, Abbaye Saint-Jacques and Abbaye Saint-Laurent, founded at the beginning of the 11th century and existing until around 1800. The coat of arms, designed for the 150th anniversary of the University in 1967, shows, under a crown, in the shield, twice each the iconographic saint attributes of Laurentius (a grate, the instrument of torture) and James (scallops) as well as the coat of arms of the city of Liège. The coat of arms represents three lions under a column bearing a pine cone.
