Additional information

The 20th of May, proclaimed World Bee Day by the United Nations at Slovenia's request, commemorates the birthday of Anton Janscha (1734-1773), the pioneer of modern beekeeping, who was appointed teacher of beekeeping at the Theresianische Imkerschule in the Augarten district of Vienna by Empress Maria Theresia in 1770. The coin designed by Janez Bizjak shows - in the shape of a globe - a honeycomb with partially covered honey cells, which roughly stylise the outlines of Europe, a large part of Africa and neighbouring areas - from the Near East to Arctic North America with Greenland.
