Commemorative coin

François Joseph Bosio

Official Journal of the European Union

The design shows Mr BOSIO and a statue as the background image. The inscription ‘MONACO’ is at the top of the image in semi-circle. At the bottom, in semi-circle as well, there are two inscriptions: ‘FRANÇOIS JOSEPH BOSIO’ and underneath ‘1768 – SCULPTEUR - 2018’. At the left and right sides of these two inscriptions, there are the mintmark and the mint master mark. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Additional information

The commemorative coin is dedicated to the 250th birthday of the Monegasque sculptor François Joseph Bosio (1768-1845). It shows his portrait, made in 1820 by Julien-Léopold Boilly, but (as on Monaco stamps of 1948 and 2018) mirror-inverted. Next to it is the marble sculpture of Salmaki's flower-wreathed nymph (naiad), created by him in 1826 and exhibited in the Louvre.
