The centre of the coin depicts an angel painted by Leonardo da Vinci in ‘The Baptism of Christ’; at the edge, on the left is the inscription ‘SAN MARINO’, on the right the inscription ‘1519 Leonardo 2019’; on the left are the initials of the artist Uliana Pernazza ‘UP’ and on the bottom right, the letter ‘R’ identifying the Mint of Rome The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Additional information

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was an Italian painter, sculptor, architect, anatomist, mechanic, engineer and natural philosopher. He is considered one of the most famous universal scholars of all times. The coin depicts an angel painted by Leonardo (without the nimbus depicted in the original), a detail of the painting from the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, which was created around 1475 and was the first to be decisively influenced by Leonardo. The work is now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
