The centenary of the Tartu Peace Treaty

Official Journal of the European Union

The treaty was signed between Estonia and Soviet Russia on 2 February 1920, and it fixed the Eastern border of Estonia, bringing an end to the War of Independence. The design depicts a tree with branches disguising the words TARTU RAHU (Tartu Peace Treaty). Ity also bears the country name ‘EESTI’ and the date of issue ‘2 February 2020’. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Additional information

The coin depicts a stylised tree with leaves, in which the letters of the occasion of issue "TARTU RAHU" (Peace of Tartu) are interwoven, as a symbol of the young state of Estonia. In 1918 Soviet Russia cancelled the Peace of Brest-Litovsk and the Red Army began a military offensive to conquer the Baltic States. Estonia then fought for state independence in the Estonian War of Independence. In the Tartu Peace Treaty of 1920, Soviet Russia renounced all rights it had ever had over Estonia and de jure recognised Estonia as an independent sovereign state and the border between the two states.
