The design depicts the UN logo. At the top is the year of issuance ‘2020’, the name of the issuing country ‘PORTUGAL’ and the inscription ‘UN 75 YEARS’. Under the words ‘UN’ and ‘YEARS’ is their translation in Portuguese ‘ONU’ and ‘ANOS’. At the left side is the name of the mint ‘CASA DA MOEDA’ and at the right side is the engraver’s name ‘ANDRÉ LETRIA’. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

The Charter of the United Nations was finalised at the Yalta Conference and signed by 50 States at the San Francisco Conference on 26 June 1945. New York became the headquarters of the organisation. As a symbol of the flag of the United Nations, the coin shows the globe with the entire landmass inhabited by man, framed by two olive branches, the classic symbol of peace. In the centre is the geographical North Pole and around it the continents of the northern hemisphere; the southern hemisphere - excluding Antarctica - is distorted by the projection, which resembles an azimuthal projection at a distance, and is shown too large in area. The year of issue "2020" and "PORTUGAL" are written at the top in irregular, handwriting-like characters. Below them, bilingually - in English and Portuguese - the year of issue "UN / ONU 75 YEARS / ANOS" (United Nations 75 years).
