Aragón and the Aragonese Mudejar architecture

The design shows the image of the tower of El Salvador de Teruel. On the left side in capital letters is the word ‘ESPAÑA’ and on the right side the mintmark and underneath it the year of issuance 2020. At the top in the central part, in a circular sense and in capital letters the legend ‘ARQUITECTURA MUDEJAR DE ARAGÓN’. The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

The Mudejares (Arabic: mudaǧǧan, made servant) were Muslims who had come under the rule of the Christian kingdoms in Spain during the Reconquista. Although socially discriminated against, the many craftsmen among them shaped the regional architecture with materials such as bricks as well as building forms and decorations from Islamic architecture such as horseshoe arches, stalactite vaults, ornaments and majolica decoration, combined with the style repertoire of the Romanesque, Gothic or Renaissance. The Mudejar style reached its heyday from the 14th to 16th century. The motif of the coin is the Torre de El Salvador of the church of San Martín in Teruel, built around 1320, which - together with other Mudejar buildings - was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
