Additional information

Immediately after the unification of Italy, there were fire brigade organisations (pompieri) of varying quality at the local level. As a rule, these were volunteer fire brigades, some of which were set up at the municipal level according to the medieval model. In 1939, the national fire brigade corps was founded, in which military service could be performed from 1950 to 2005. However, the fire brigade in South Tyrol - like those in Trentino and Valle d'Aosta - is an independent organisation and, unlike in the rest of Italy, relies almost exclusively on volunteers. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the national fire brigade in Italy, its logo is shown.
