The portrait of King Albert II has been updated. Differences in the design can be seen on the cheekbones and on the hair vertebrae next to the king's forehead. According to the guidelines recommended by the Commission of the European Communities for the national sides of euro circulation coins on 19 December 2008, it is allowed to update coin designs representing the Head of State every fifteen years to reflect changes in the appearance of the Head of State. However, according to the new guideline, the 2008 update came too early and therefore had to be revised. |
