For the 2009-2013 mintages, the portrait of King Albert II has been modified once again, using the design by Jan Alfons Keustermans, as in the first series of mintages. According to the guidelines recommended by the Commission of the European Communities on 19 December 2008 for the national sides of euro circulation coins, the designs representing the Head of State may be updated every fifteen years to reflect changes in the appearance of the Head of State. However, according to the new guideline, the 2008 update came too early and therefore had to be revised. On the other hand, the other changes in the 2008 update were retained.
